RICH, VJ. “Clinical instructors' and athletic training students' perceptions of teachable moments in an athletic training clinical education setting.” Journal Of Athletic Training [J Athl Train] 2009 May-Jun; Vol. 44 (3), pp. 294-303.WEB.February 8,2011.
The person I interviewed for our assignment did not recommend this particular article, but as I was browsing through some random articles pertaining to athletic training, I found this article from the Athletic Training Journal. It is about how Athletic training students are able to learn from clinical instructors. The study took a group of students and had them work with come clinical instructors and had the students say how they would learn best and what worked for them. Many students expressed that hands-on teaching and interactive teaching was most useful for them and it was easier for the students to retain the information taught by the instructors. The researchers were able to conclude that by students working along side the clinical instructors and not just being taught by them, the athletic training students had a better understanding of what was being taught.
I feel that this was an important study to have done because it now tells us what can be best for our education. We will be able to know what helps us retain information faster and better and I hope that this will better prepare us to work by ourselves as medical professionals. As students, getting our “hands dirty”, and getting involved in the learning gives us a chance to see what it is that we are being taught and giving us a chance to perhaps teach ourselves these important treatments and techniques.
